LCS-25 (Littoral Combat Ship); Freedom Class

The Making of the LCS-25

Design.

The development of first fleet of littoral combat ships (LCS) was initiated by the US Navy in 2002 and ordered from Lockheed Martin. The USS Marinette is the 13th Freedom-Class LCS to be built using the monohull design.

Contract.

Fincantieri Marinette Marine Corp. was awarded the building contract by the US Navy on March 31st, 2016.

Build.

The LCS-25 was subsequently built at Fincantieri Marinette Marine’s shipyard, located in the City of Marinette along the Menominee River.

Launch.

On October 31st of 2020 the LCS-25 was successfully launched by a Lockheed Martin led team into the Menominee River from Fincantieri Marinette Marine’s facility along the shore.

Christening.

The LCS-25 was christened by the ship’s sponsor, Jennifer Granholm, on November 20, 2021. To christen the ship, a bottle of sparkling wine was broken on the bow of the LCS-25 during a ceremony at Fincantieri Marinette Marine.

Commissioning.

On September 16th of 2023, the USS Marinette LCS-25 was officially commissioned, at KK Integrated Logistics Dock on the Menominee River, and handed over to the captain and crew.
